Family members of cracker unit fire victims move court for compensation

Family members of staff of Rajammal Fireworks in Virudhunagar district who misplaced their lives within the 2020 fire on the unit premises filed a petition earlier than the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in search of a course to the State to offer compensation.

In six separate petitions filed by household members of the victims, the petitioners stated the State authorities had introduced an interim compensation of ₹1 lakh and the Collector had assured that the State would offer a compensation of ₹10 lakh and employment.

But, no reduction has been granted to the household members to date. In spite of sending a quantity of representations to the authorities, no steps have been taken, they stated. The household members sought a course to the State to offer satisfactory compensation.

They stated that because the State had allowed Rajammal Fireworks to operate with out a correct licence and permission, the authorities had been vicariously liable to pay compensation. The authorities had didn’t correctly monitor the cracker models within the area, the petitioners stated.

Justice C. V. Karthikeyan sought a response from the State and adjourned the listening to within the petitions filed by the six petitioners – M. Sivabalasubramaniyan, T. Krishnaveni, G. Singaraj, Okay. Mohanaselvi, G. Arumugathai and B. Vijaya.
